We hope you'll all join the students and staff of Longfellow Elementary in wishing good luck to our very own 5th Grade teacher, Mrs. Shaw, as she travels to Boston, Massachusetts to compete in the famous Boston Marathon on April 15th. The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon, where both professional and amateur runners from around the world qualify to compete together in the twenty-six mile run. For women, a qualifying completion of a marathon certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations in under 3:35, or around an average of 8 minutes a mile for 26 miles – so to even qualify is quite an accomplishment!

Longfellow hosted an Artist in Residence during the week of Jan. 21-24, 2013. Fax Gilbert is an artist from Iowa and he is also a member of the Nebraska Arts Council. His residency deals with the performance of creative dramatics, and the presentation of a play titled “Great Nebraska History Play”. The project included a fun-filled week of creative dramatic plays. His focus group was the 4th grade, however he had a chance to work with students from all grades.
We would like to thank the Longfellow PTO for helping to sponsor the residency together with the aid of a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council.

Each Wednesday students are celebrated for their good character choices at school. Staff members give chidren Longfellow paw prints for showing respect, responsibility, compassion and integrity. These paw prints go into our Character Cans and teachers select one special paw print from their classroom Character Can each week. Mrs. Simmons announces the lucky winners every Wednesday morning on the intercom. In addition to having their nameread over the intercom, Wowie Wednesday winners receive a certificate. Our Character Cans are full of paw prints from so many students making great character choices. Please look through your child's Wednesday folder carefully, you just might find a Wowie Wednesday certificate! |
